Post for Dog Lovers

If you don’t care about dogs, just wait for my next blog post.

Well, it’s been a busy few weeks…not doing as much sewing, but I’ve sure been getting to know Kalee’s vet really well. Poor Kalee has had so many issues lately. She’s struggled with pancreatitis and gastritis since she was about two years old, and she’ll be 15 in July. That means we’ve been dealing with stomach issues for a LONG time—and we’ve seen more than a dozen vets between our regular office, three different ERs, and even two vets in Florida! Honestly, it’s probably more than that with all the vets who have come and gone over the years.

Her most recent symptoms—burping, gagging, not eating or drinking, and obvious discomfort—have been really worrying. It makes my stomach turn and makes it hard to even think about going away and leaving her. She gets very nauseated (lots of grass eating and drooling), though thankfully she’s only vomited twice…both times outside at 3 a.m.!

Last week alone I was at the vet Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday—and then again Monday. Even the vet said she looks so sick. At our last visit, Kalee curled up on my lap and fell asleep while we waited. For 15 minutes or more—with dogs barking, doors closing, people talking—she just slept. That’s how worn out she’s been.

Back in January, we switched her to a kidney-friendly dog food because of some elevated levels, and she loved it at first. But then she stopped eating again. I’ve been putting out three or four different options at a time—Rx canned kidney stew, chicken and rice, and my own ground turkey/veggie/rice mix (you’ll see that in the photo). Sometimes I even add a bowl of kibble, just in case. And still…nope.

That said, the past couple of days—I'm almost afraid to say it—she’s been more alert and has even played with her toys two or three days in a row! She’s still picky, though. I never know from one meal to the next what she’ll eat, so I just keep trying different options until something works. I just want her to eat and drink.

And then there’s little Gigi, who is an absolute doll. She has heart murmur 3–4 & congestive heart failure and is on liquid heart medication twice a day—10:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. These dogs take more medications than Bob and I! But honestly, I’ll do whatever it takes to keep them comfortable and happy.

So that’s life lately. When I do get a chance to sew, Kalee will lay on her mat on top of my sewing table, look out the window, and then drift off to sleep. Yes, that is snow outside—and my hex pieces are in the lower right corner. See? I am still sewing a little!

If you’re a dog lover, please say a prayer for our girl—that she keeps feeling better, or that somewhere, some vet figures out exactly what’s going on.

Thanks for reading. 💛

Life lately and my babies.....

I guess I really don’t need an excuse for not updating my blog… after all, it is my blog! HA. Between normal life chores, volunteer work at the library, and the biggest issue of all — our dogs — things have been a little overwhelming.

Kalee has had health issues for the past 10 years due to pancreatitis. She recently went in for her yearly wellness visit (yes, dogs get wellness exams too! 😂) and lab work. Unfortunately, her results came back with elevated kidney values (BUN, creatinine, etc.). UGH. On top of that, she’s been having a few different episodes than her “normal” pancreatitis symptoms, vet thinks this could be the beginning of kidney disease.

I picked up some new kibble and started mixing it in slowly with her regular food and ground turkey, but it hasn’t gone well. She seems nauseous and uncomfortable within a day of eating it, so I’ve stopped it for now. I’ll have to figure out a better diet plan for her.

I started researching the nutritional value of the ground turkey and veggie mix I cook for her. It’s helped her pancreatitis tremendously, but now I have to watch protein, phosphorus, and other levels because of her kidneys. OMG… I even used AI to research nutrition info for different kidney kibbles and compare them to my homemade mix. I still don’t know what the right answer is.

Then, on Thanksgiving morning, Gigi stopped eating. Completely. She has never done that — and even Kalee has never stopped eating or drinking, even when sick. I was a wreck. I managed to get her to nibble on some turkey mix before we went to the kids’ house, which helped me breathe a little easier. But the next morning, she still didn’t want to eat.

I got her into the vet, and her bloodwork showed very high liver enzymes. The recommendation was an abdominal ultrasound, which we did yesterday. I probably won’t get those results until tomorrow.  In addition, we discovered a heart murmur in September at a Grade 3, last exam it's closer to a Grade 4.

Honestly, I’ve been sick to my stomach with worry over both of these girls and trying to figure out diets that will work for them. But thankfully, for reasons I don’t understand, Gigi started eating her four small meals again as of Sunday. I’m so grateful… and cautiously hopeful.

So prayers for my girls, please....they are seniors (Kalee 14 & Gigi 12-13) so I know we'll have health issues..just want them to have a good life....

Sister Time!

Today I am off to  have a few days visiting with my sister south of here!  She and Nancy have moved to Florida full time now and I haven't seen her since last February.  I'm really anxious to have some time together.  Gigi will be coming with me and Kalee will stay home with dad!  She's hoping for walks and golf cart rides!  Gigi will get to visit with my sister's two dogs!

Yesterday I bathed Gigi and washed Kalee's face and feet, packed up my overnight bag then sat out in the lanai to bead.  My bud, Sally, called and said she was working on her coloring book.  So she gathered up her books and watercolor pencils and we both sat and chatted while we worked!  Of course Gigi enjoyed having a lap to sit on!

I'm still working on my squirrel...this was the progress last week

And this is what I finished today!  Making headway but it does take time!!

It is going to be a challenge working on his face and body to get the detail I want.  Just might need to make a visit to my favorite bead shop here in Ocala!  Like I need an excuse!

This and that!

So Friday I met with the kids to celebrate Darrin's BD...it was fun to be with all the kids and grand kids.  Although, Nick and Amber wouldn't let me take their pics so I'm just showing Kris and Dawn!  (Bob was at home with 'the girls' and Jeff was out of town!).

And I am finally getting back to some of my art projects.  I'm working on a few BD fiber cards and trying to finish up the hand work on my texture piece for the online blog challenge. Pics to come later this week.
I also put up our Christmas decorations in the family room.  The kids are coming up for Thanksgiving so I like to have the house decorated as they can't be here for Christmas.  Hopefully, I'll have pics of art work forthcoming.  Until then, this is what I worked on yesterday (Lion's didn't play!).

And I gave little Gigi a bath...isn't she the cutest little thing!

She and Kalee play constantly and are becoming best buds!!

LIFE IS GOOD!

Life is tough!

Yep...it's hard being Dog Whisperer, Minute Maid, Betty Crocker and fiber lady all in one!  Especially this week with being Dog Whisperer!  Gigi's toe took a bad turn on Monday with bleeding again...so we were back to E Collar and a baby sock.

We're now back to just a baby sock when we walk (and when she sleeps!) or the collar if I'm playing Minute Main and Betty!  I can't watch her all the time and we don't want her licking or chewing her foot.  The 'quick' looks great again so keeping our fingers crossed it's on its way of healing!  WHEW!

This is Gigi with her 'sock' on while she and Kalee were walking this a.m.  I let them 'sniff' for about 5-10 min. then they have to walk beside me.  I've actually made about 8 socks....just putting ties on baby socks so they hold up on her leg!

I did get BD fiber cards made but pics are on my camera so I'll post those later!  And I've starting working on our 'texture' challenge for the online group, Art Quilters Around the World'!  It's due November 31st so I need to get it finished...upcoming holidays and entertaining will keep me busy let alone having a project to do.  I also did some painting on the canvas roll I have to get started on my fiber Valentines.  Otherwise, I'm not doing anything!  HA

Where is it????

Yep, I've lost it!  And I have looked all over but still no luck in finding it!  What is it?  TIME!!!!!  I am a fairly productive person but lately I feel like I just can't find the time for everything!  I am not one to just sit around watching TV or even just reading a book all afternoon (which sounds like something I would love to do!)  BUT...I always seem to have so much to do and don't want to waste time!  UGH...hate this feeling but life goes on so.....

I was hand stitching my hex horse #2 but after I did the stab stitch next to a circle I decided I don't like it!!  So....I'm thinking of removing the stab stitches in the one circle (on the right) and just keeping the other circle as is.

This coming weekend I, along with two others, will be headed to Tommy's house for a weekend of stitching!  We did this girls weekend two years ago and that year I took my sewing machine and worked on making a hum bug bag....you can see the post here.  I also did some hand stitching too which I forgot!  I was starting on my peacock, which is now ffinished.  We'll have show and tell so I will make sure to bring that piece along with some other small quilts.    I am bringing my hex horse piece to get feedback on the stitching.

Anyway, this year I'm just bringing all hand work.  Seems that's what most of my projects consist of is hand stitching.  I love machine quilting but for some reason hand work seems to fit the last few art quilts.

This may look like a lot but the top part (bottom pic) is all hand projects (3 of them!).  The blue plastic bag are my quilts for show and tell.  It all fits in one carry bag.  Easy packing this year!

It should be an interesting weekend for Bob as he'll be home ALONE with the girls!  Just hope he survives and I don't have to return early!  YIKES!
