"IT'" is a bird, "IT" is a plane! No, "IT" is a butterfly!!

I'll explain "IT" in a moment....I want to introduce you to my friend, Joan.  Some of my followers may remember Joan from a fabric painting session she did at our house in 2013.  You can see that post here.  Joan does beautiful paintings....I just need her to come back to the house and paint more fabric or paper!...until then....Joan is/was also a good 'mom' to "IT"....here are some excerpts of emails Joan has sent to me over the past few weeks...I'm also including video's that she sent me!

"I went to a friend's husband's 80th birthday yesterday and one of the guests there brought Bill a gift of a monarch caterpillar. She and I talked and I asked a few questions about raising the butterfly since I had never attempted it or knew anything about it. She leaves the party and returns a few minutes later with a inch long caterpillar in a cottage cheese container resting on a milkweed and gives it to me. Not knowing what I was getting into I accepted the responsibility of this life. I went home a little later and transferred (IT) to a quart glass jar with Saran cover and poked breathing holes in the cover, not In IT. I watched IT through the evening and got on line to read about IT's life cycle. I was very concerned that I would not have enough milkweed to feed its voracious appetite, about 20 leaves though its life cycle so I called my neighbor last night and she said she would check to see if she had any milkweed growing in her back yard in the morning."

"It may be all for naught since IT hasn't moved since I brought IT home. When I see a sign of life I may give IT a name. So far I feel like a failure. I'm torn between hoping it moves and hoping it doesn't. Bad mother! I will have to go hunting for milkweed growing around here and the weeds are all wet from the rain."

"Update on IT, which should have been named by now.  I had to run some errands and was gone a couple of hours. During that time IT shimmied out of it's exoskeleton, shedding in on the jar floor like a castoff dress, forming an emerald green "kimono" around itself, better known as a chrysalis, and was hanging by a spun thread from the Saran Wrap ceiling when I got home. You just can't turn your back on these things, and since it's all wrapped up, IT can't eat anything, at least for now. I moved it from the counter to a serving cart by a window and IT swayed so much I was afraid the thread would break so I did not take IT with me to the cottage. I'm just waiting for something to happen now."

"I'm trapped. I need a baby monitor. I was going to go early this morning to the dealership and get my oil changed. I'm getting maintenance messages, instead I pulled up a chair to my island because I don't want to miss the metamorphosis. Now I think I know what it's like waiting for a birth. How long does this take. It already turned black. I could wait for hours!"

This is Joan releasing "IT"!!!

And a happy ending!!!!  "IT" is alive and well....just check out these video's Joan sent me!

I told Joan she needs to write a blog, as she is so funny.    I always enjoy reading her emails and her 'MacGyver" episodes!  But those are a whole other blog post!!!  Who knows...I may have to share some of those if I can get Joan to give me permission!!!  Until then I hope you enjoyed meeting and reading about "IT" from my friend, Joan!!!  Congrats, Joan!!!  You were a good mom to "IT"!!!!

Leaf Diary Addition

Not much work being done on my leaf book...it will be heading to Florida with me.  But I did find a piece that I may include in the leaf diary!

This piece was painted on fabric by my bud, Joan.  Back in 2013, Joan came to the house to play with painting on fabric.  Joan is a beautiful watercolor artist but she has never painted on fabric, so I thought it would be fun for her and I knew she would do a wonderful job.  And she didn't disappoint me!  I know she's so talented and you can just take a look at this picture and read the blog post to see her results and her talent!

Joan ended up giving me the first flower she painted and I ended up making her a snap bag from it.
The back of the snap bag.

You can read that blog post here.  So, why am I telling you about Joan?  Well, she took home some paints and fabric that same year and she made another flower, which she gave me!

Go figure! I was going through my stash and I found this piece and I think I might put it in my leaf diary!  It could be the last page to show 'spring' is coming!  Most of my leaves are representing fall!  Just a thought!  After all, Joan doesn't need another snap bag!  HA  Yep...it's going in my diary!   Just too  pretty not to use somewhere!

Killing Time!

I posted this picture that my friend, Joan, painted on fabric awhile back.  She finished the painting and I asked for the piece of painted fabric back.  I told her I had an idea for it!

This is or was Joan's finished piece.  I printed out a flower outline on fabric, from a copyright free web site.  Joan knows what kind of flower it is...I'm not!  Joan paints using watercolor and does some amazing work. This was the first time she used acrylics and painted on fabric!  check out the shading!!  Just beautiful!

I had some time to kill today before getting ready for our exhibit opening  so I made a snap bag for Joan!

Obviously this is the back!

I know Joan doesn't check out my blog so it should be a surprise for her!  Not sure when I'll see her next but it should be within the next week or two.  Now to hope she can use it to store something in.  It measures 8 1/2" x 9 1/2".

So now to take Kalee for her 2nd walk since I won't be able to walk her later!  And then to get ready to meet up with the ladies in our fiber group for dinner and then on to the opening!!

Painting Day for Joan!

My friend, Joan, is a wonderful watercolor artist...I've been wanting her to paint on fabric for quite sometime and today she came over for a play day!

I don't think I got a picture of Joan, other than her hands!  This is Joan (or her hands!) working away!!  The flower Joan painted was done free hand!!!  Geezzz...even my stick men don't look like stick men...I can imagine painting a flower free hand!!
She did wet the fabric first then started painting..hence, the grayish areas that appear on the flower petals.  We are working on a black foam pad which added to the grayish look.

Keep in mind, Joan painted this using fabric and acrylic paints!  Looks like watercolor doesn't it!
A tree drawn freehand!
And check this out!!!  Isn't it beautiful!  I printed out a picture of a flower on fabric just so Joan could get used to using some of the different paints.  She  switched between fabric and acrylic as well as adding textile medium and/or water and aloe!

I think Joan did a wonderful job on the shading!!!!   She's going to finish off the smaller flowers trying some of her watercolor paints at home along with some textile medium.  I love how she blended the colors.  I think this piece would look really nice on a canvas bag.  It's only 8 1/2" x 11" so it would fit nicely on the front of a bag.   I would love to come up with a design for Joan to paint and I would quilt!  I think it would be a very nice partnership!!
